The EU AI Act was initially envisioned as a groundbreaking framework for safe and trustworthy artificial intelligence. However, recent developments are raising important concerns about its future direction.

A recent publication linked to the DECIDE project examines how the Digital Omnibus proposal, introduced in late 2025, may significantly alter the trajectory of the EU AI Act.

The proposal appears to weaken some of the Act’s original regulatory ambitions, creating uncertainty for businesses, civil society, and public institutions. This has led to growing dissatisfaction among stakeholders and raises broader questions about the EU’s strategic direction in AI governance.

The article argues that even imperfect regulation, if aligned with the right design principles, may be more valuable than delaying progress due to short-term concerns about regulatory burden.
