On Wednesday, 21 October 2026 (10:00–11:00), Prof. dr. ir. Mieke Boon, Principal Investigator of DECIDE, will deliver a keynote at BNAIC/BeNeLearn 2026, the Joint International Scientific Conferences on AI and Machine Learning, held in Maastricht from 21 to 23 October.
In her talk, “Beyond Responsible AI: Concept Formation, Human Judgment, and the Future of Human-AI Practices”, Mieke argues that integrating AI into practices built on expertise and understanding raises a challenge that is not only technological or ethical, but epistemological. Explanations produced by AI still have to be interpreted by people, which leaves what she calls an “interpretability gap”. The key question is therefore how humans make sense of AI outputs and turn them into responsible action.
Drawing on philosophy of science, cognitive science and Kant’s notion of judgment, she explores which human capacities remain indispensable in an AI-rich world, and calls for designing Human-AI practices that strengthen, rather than weaken, our capacity for understanding, judgment and responsible action.
These questions are central to DECIDE’s work on transparent AI-DSS and on AI-CSS that support citizens in making their own informed decisions.
